If you find yourself at the Overlook Hike, then you are right where you need to be to find the Pine Creek trail. This trail is NOT clearly marked in any way. The trail head is located in the parking lot right as you exit the tunnel.
There is a sign to follow the path under the road/bridge. You will be able to see somewhat of a trail. Follow that down into the slot canyon. Small children will need help down but I think they would have fun exploring the canyon.
Pine Creek Gorge Slot Canyon
To us here in the Wellsboro area, the canyon is a precious and gorge-ous natural resource. Its geology is severe and stunning, it is worth visiting and spending time here, that's why we call it the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, and that's why we share it with people from all over the World. The deepest point of this 47-mile (76 kilometer) canyon is 1,450 feet (440 meters). If you'd like to reach it, go to the southern part of the gorge. Pine Creek Gorge was formed roughly 20,000 years ago, when the Laurentide Continental Glacier dammed it and formed a lake that later overflowed and carved a deep channel.
- Pine Creek in Zion National Park forms a slot canyon that runs parallel to Utah State Highway 9 in the gorge below Mount Carmel Tunnel. Tourists gaze across the canyon daily, often unaware that the thin, dark crevice below is a glimpse into an entirely different world.
- The Pine Creek Gorge, almost 50 miles long and over 1,000 feet deep, is known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. It offers spectacular views, abundant wildlife and beautiful foliage that promise a brilliant fall display of deep reds, yellows and purples in early October.
Once you are down, head to the right. The trail is passible for about 15 minutes, after that you really need some equipment and ropes to go any further, but if you have a short amount of time and want to see some pretty slot canyons, this is a great little hike.

Upper Whitewater River Gorge (NC) Misc. Falls – 7-23-2016
My next adventure would be a group hike organized by my friend Thomas (The Honey Badger) Mabry to one of the many audacious locations found within the wonderful ‘Mr. Badger`s Outdoor Neighborhood'. This adventure would take us to the upper realm of the Whitewater River in Jackson and Transylvania County (the county line runs down the river) located in Nantahala and Pisgah National Forest areas. The hike is listed as ‘extremely difficult' and for most waterfall hikers that would be a true statement however, it would not apply to the ones who were included within this particular group. We would be seeing multiple waterfalls before this day was over starting with the appropriately named ‘Entrance Falls' which lies at the entrance of what is known as the Upper Whitewater Slot Canyon. Access to these falls can be tricky as the easiest way requires going across a short section of private property within a sort of gated community but, our expert and very knowledgeable leader, the Badger, knew the precise route to follow to avoid any issues and we soon found ourselves on the other side of civilization and following the Upper Whitewater River into the Jocassee Gorge area of North Carolina. (Note: I thought at the time that we were going to the 800+ feet high Whitewater Falls ! I was a bit disappointed when I learned that we were not but, that quickly faded away when I first laid eyes on the Slot Canyon !)
